魯山人は母の不貞によりできた子であり、それを忌んだ父は割腹自殺を遂げた。生後すぐ里子に出され6歳で福田家に落ち着くまで養家を転々とした。この出自にまつわる鬱屈は終生払われることはなく、また魯山人の人格形成に深甚な影響を及ぼした。

6度の結婚（1908年、17年、27年、38年、40年、48年）はすべて破綻、2人の男児は夭折した。娘を溺愛したものの長じて魯山人の骨董を持ち出したことから勘当し、最晩年にいたっても魯山人の病床に呼ぶことすら許さなかった。その一方家庭の温かみに飢えていた魯山人は、ラジオのホームドラマの何気ない会話、微笑ましい場面によく肩を震わせ涙を流して嗚咽したという[2]。

美食家として名を馳せた魯山人は、フランス料理の外見偏重傾向に対しても厳しく、渡仏の際に訪れた著名な鴨料理店トゥール・ダルジャンで、「ソースが合わない」と味そのものを評価し、自ら持参したわさび醤油で食べたことさえあった[3]。

つねに傲岸、不遜、狷介、虚栄などの悪評がつきまとい、毒舌でも有名で、柳宗悦、梅原龍三郎、横山大観、小林秀雄、ピカソまで容赦なく罵倒した。そして傲慢な態度と物言いが祟り1936年（昭和11年）には星岡茶寮から追放されてしまう。他方その天衣無縫ぶりが久邇宮邦彦王や吉田茂などから愛されもした
